Widnes 1st formerly Runcorn Gap
(1852 - 1870)

Widnes (1st) station opened as Runcorn Gap on July 1 1852 replacing the original Runcorn Gap station which was the terminus of the original 1833 route from St Helens to Widnes railway

The Garston to Warrington line was double-track and Runcorn Gap was constructed with two platforms

The new Runcorn Gap station was served by passenger trains that ran to Garston Dock, St Helens and to Warrington. Most trains ran between Runcorn Gap and St Helens. Arrivals from St Helens ran on alternately to Garston or Warrington

A new line to Liverpool via Garston opened on February 15 1864 and a direct route from Runcorn Gap to Liverpool Lime Street was created

To reflect the growing status of the town of Widnes the railway company renamed Runcorn Gap station as Widnes on September 1 1864

A new Widnes station, Widnes South, was opened 50 yards to the north of the existing facility on March 1 1870, and the original Widnes station was closed to passengers and the station buildings were demolished and replaced by more sidings to expand the busy goods facility which continued in use until March 1969
