Irlam formerly Irlam & Cadishead formerly Irlam
(1873 - )

The station was opened as Irlam in September 1873 and renamed Irlam and Cadishead on August 1 1879

From 1873 many services from Manchester, St Helens and Wigan terminated or started from this station because of its proximity to the steel works belonging to the Lancashire Steel Corporation

When the Manchester Ship Canal was planned as competition in 1893, the railway line had to pass over it on a bridge which caused the line to be diverted slightly to the south and therefore the station buildings were on the 'wrong side' of the tracks

In August 1954, the station was renamed Irlam for Cadishead, reverting to Irlam on May 6 1974

After lying derelict for nearly 25 years, the station building was renovated and reopened in March 2015. It now serves as a railway-themed cafe, with toilets, a cycle hub, and 60-space car park
