Haydock Park Racecourse
(1899 - 1963)
Haydock Park Racecourse station which opened on February 10 1899, was situated on the Lowton St Marys to St Helens branch of the Great Central Railway (GCR)
The line ran along the northern boundary of the Haydock Park racecourse passing very close to the main stand but the service only called at Haydock Park Racecourse station during race meetings
The station was provided with very few facilities. The line was double-track and had two long platforms, capable of handling excursion trains. Toilets were provided on both platforms
During race meetings, Haydock Park Racecourse station was very busy being used by thousands of people. Trains came from destinations including Liverpool,
Manchester, Warrington, St Helens and Sheffield
British Railways withdrew the passenger service between Lowton St Marys and St Helens from March 3 1952 but Haydock Park Racecourse continued to be served by race day trains until October 5 1963
The line through Haydock Park Racecourse continued to be used by freight trains
In 1989, the track was lifted through the site of Haydock Park Racecourse. By 2005 much of the station site had been lost under a
landscape planting scheme and an extension to the car park
