Staithes
(1883 - 1958)

Staithes Station opened on December 3 1883 with two platforms serving a passing loop. The main station building incorporating the stationmaster’s house was on the ‘down’ platform with a wooden waiting shelter on the ‘up’ platform. There was a small goods yard for fish traffic on the ‘down’ side of the line to the south of the station. There were three other sidings, one serving a small goods warehouse and another serving coal drops

To the north of the station, the railway immediately passed over the Staithes Viaduct, built in 1875 but not opened to railway traffic until 1883 along with the rest of the line. The viaduct was built of iron and concrete, but due to the strong winds in the area trains could only cross at 20 mph

The station closed in May 1958 and the track was lifted in 1959

The ‘up’ platform has been demolished but part of the ‘down’ platform survives along with all the platform buildings and the stationmaster’s house which now form one residence. The small goods shed extant and the coal drops are also still extant. Some of them have now been converted into garages
