Chester General
(1848 - )

In 1840, before the construction of Chester General station (1847-8) the area to the immediate west of the present station was occupied by a temporary station for the Chester & Birkenhead Railway in Brook Street

Although consideration was given to relocating the General station closer to the City Centre, it was decided to consolidate the operation about the existing track

Chester General station was a joint station between the Chester and Holyhead Railway, the Chester and Crewe Railway and the Birkenhead Railway

Express passenger trains operated from Birkenhead Woodside via Chester to London Paddington station until the electrification of the West Coast Main Line in 1967

In 1993, Chester became the terminus of one of the four Wirral Line branches of the Merseyrail network, using 3rd rail electrification and providing frequent rapid access along the Wirral to Birkenhead and all four underground stations in central Liverpool
