Menai Bridge to Afon Wen Railway
(1852 - 1970)

The Menai Bridge – Afon Wen line opened in stages between 1852 and 1871 from Menai Bridge to Caernarvon then Caernarvon to Afon Wen

The line became very busy when the Butlin's Holiday Camp was opened in 1948 at nearby Pwllweli and over a hundred trains would use the line on Saturdays

When the Caernarvon to Afon Wen section closed on December 7 1964, a bus service was arranged to transport holiday makers from Caernarvon station to the Camp. This was not popular and the bus service was withdrawn

The line from Caernarvon to Menai Bridge had been reprieved in 1964 but in January 1970, the line to Menai Bridge was closed
