Banks
(1878 - 1964)
Banks Station opened on February 20 1878 with the first section of the WLR line from Hesketh Park to Hesketh Bank
As the line was double-track, two platforms were provided. The main facilities were on the down (Preston-bound) consisting of a single-storey L-shaped brick-building.
An enclosed timber waiting shelter was on the up (Southport direction) platform
A goods yard was behind the down platform
In 1897, a stationmaster’s house was built at Banks, constructed adjacent to the station building
In summer 1932, Banks had 17 weekday services to Southport and 16 to Preston
The 'Beeching' report of 1963 recommended the complete closure of the railway from Meols Cop through to Preston. The goods yard at Banks station closed
on April 6 1964 and, despite local protests, all passenger services were withdrawn with effect from September 1964
Banks station closed and the station buildings were demolished in February 1965
