Liverpool Lime Street
(1836 - )
Liverpool Lime Street is a terminus railway station and the main station serves the city centre of Liverpool opening in August 1836 and it is the oldest grand terminus mainline station still in use in the world
A large building constructed in the Renaissance Revival style fronts the station. The historic Liverpool to Manchester railway terminates at Lime Street plus a branch of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston and TransPennine Express trains and other local services
The station was used because the original L&M railway station at Crown Street could not cope with the new railway's number of passengers
There are nine platforms but major reconstruction work expected to be finished in 2018 will increase this number
