Ditton Junction to Skelton Junction Railway
(1853 - 1962)

The Warrington & Stockport Railway (W&S) which opened on November 1 1853 was part of the Warrington and Altrincham Railway (W&A) that ran to Warrington from a connection with the Manchester South Junction & Altrincham Railway (MSJAR) at Timperley Junction. At Warrington, the W&A was authorised to make an end-on connection with the Garston and Warrington line and with the London & North Western Railway (LNWR) and the Birkenhead Joint Railway (BJR) at Walton Junction

The line closed to passengers on September 10 1962 when all regular passenger services on the line ceased. The line continued in use as a busy freight artery particularly for coal heading west towards Fiddlers Ferry Power Station and Garston Docks. Even in the early 1980's there were 60 trains per day booked to use the line east of Warrington

The line closed east of Latchford with the last booked trains running on July 7 1985 and the line was lifted in 1988 and the route east of Latchford bridge forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail cycleway and footpath between Southport and Hull
