Walton on the Hill
(1879 - 1918)
Walton-on-the Hill station was located on the western point of the Walton Triangle at the junction of Rice Lane and Queens Drive. It was at the mouth of a tunnel which was a busy railway location right up to the late 1960s
When the line opened in January 1880, it was the line terminus but 7 months later on July 13 1880 services started running through to Huskisson
The station was located in a cutting at the north end of the three Walton-on-the-Hill tunnels and the station building straddled the line above the Walton Hill tunnel
The Huskisson branch was a double-track railway and paths were cut into the sandstone walls of the cutting leading down to the two platforms which had basic waiting shelters
On the west side of the up platform there was a goods yard which consisted of 5 sidings and a 10-ton crane
The December 1895 timetable showed Walton-on-the-Hill as having 6 arrivals and 5 departures on weekdays plus 5 arrivals and 5 departures on Saturdays and 3 trains in each direction on Sundays
The passenger station closed on January 1 1918 a very early casualty to road competition. However it remained virtually intact until the early 1980s when the area was developed for housing
