Atlantic Coast Railway
(1876 - )
The Atlantic Coast Line starts from Par station, in the village and port of Par. The station is on the Cornish Main Line, and trains to Newquay use a curve of almost 180 degrees before joining
the route of the original Cornwall Minerals Railway near the former St Blazey station
Originally built as a standard-gauge tramway from the 1840s to serve Newquay Harbour, the line was upgraded for locomotives in 1874 and passenger services began between Newquay and Fowey on 20 June 1876.
There was no connection at the present Par station until 1892 when the broad-gauge main line was 'narrowed' to standard gauge by the Great Western Railway and the connecting curve was built from St Blazey
Joseph Treffry of Fowey who inherited considerable lands and mineral resources in central Cornwall expanded his interests by building a horse-operated tramway up the Luxulyan Valley to Molinnis, near the present-day
Bugle; this line opened in 1844. Later he built another tramway from Newquay to Hendra, and from Newquay to East Wheal Rose mine; he also developed Newquay Harbour: these lines opened in 1849, and collectively are conventionally known as the Treffry Tramways.
Both were on the standard gauge. Treffry had made it clear that he wanted to connect these lines, forming a through route between Par and Newquay; in particular this would have enabled copper and tin ores
to be exported from the north coast of Cornwall to south Wales and coal to be imported that way, avoiding the difficult shipping route round Land's End
Unfortunately he died before his dream could be realised and his horse-drawn tramways were soon replaced by the steam engine
