Great Howard Street formerly Liverpool
(1848 - 1851)
The station at Great Howard Street opened with the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (LYR) line on November 20 1848 and was known as Liverpool. It was also the western terminus of the Liverpool and Bury Railway (ELR). With trains
serving destinations such as Bury and Rochdale
On August 3 1846, the LYR obtained an act to extend the line to Tithebarn Street which meant that the station at Great Howard Street was intended to be temporary but the railway company
realised the expansion of goods services at the site which opened in March 1849
The March 1850 timetable showed sixteen arrivals and sixteen departures from Liverpool Great Howard Street on Monday to Saturday and on Sundays there were seven arrivals and seven departures
The Tithebarn Street terminus later to be named Liverpool Exchange opened on May 13 1850 and from that date LYR trains ran to the new facility. ELR trains continued to run to Great Howard Street until July 1851
after which it closed to passenger services. After closure of the passenger station, Great Howard Street station was given over to goods services being extended in 1852 at a cost of £48,000
