Birkenhead Town
(1889 - 1945)

A new station was opened at Birkenhead Woodside on March 31 1878 but was not ideal for central Birkenhead and after much publicity Birkenhead Town station was opened on January 1 1889

A sloping footpath and a covered stairway connected the booking office in Tunnel Road to the Down platform (Woodside direction) and a covered stairway to the Up (Chester direction). Both platforms were of a length capable of accommodating main line trains and both platforms had waiting facilities in the form of a brick and sandstone building with a slate roof and canopies were also provided

During the 2nd World War there was a reduction in services at Birkenhead Town and the station was closed completely on May 7 1945
