Monks Ferry (1844 - 1878)
Birkenhead Monks Ferry was opened on October 23 1844 as the new northern terminus of the Chester & Birkenhead Railway, replacing the Grange Lane terminus
The station was built to capture customers on ferries that operated between Liverpool and Monks Ferry and the main facilities were housed within a single-storey building on the south side of the station. They consisted of two booking offices, a cloak room, stationmaster's office, refreshment rooms, toilets and waiting rooms for both sexes
There were three platforms and three goods sidings and the lines merged into a single track so that trains could enter the Monks Ferry Tunnel
By the 1870s Monks Ferry was too small for the traffic levels that the line was carrying and there was no room to expand. The solution was to build a new railway station and passenger ferry terminal at Woodside and Monks Ferry closed to passengers on March 31 1878 but continued goods services until March 1961
