Cathcart Street formerly Bridge End (1856 - 1961)
The station was opened in 1856 and closed on June 5 1961
Cathcart Street Goods was a goods terminus in Birkenhead. Originally known as Bridge End, the station was situated adjacent to the East Float, on the Birkenhead Dock Branch railway line
Goods were transferred between cargo vessels and the railway network at the depot. In the 1920s it was a hive of activity. Lorries, trolleys, horses and carts were used to move freight between the warehouses and the wagons
Birkenhead docks were built in 1847 by the Great Western Railway Company and came under the control of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board 10 years later. The docks served both passengers and cargo
The connection with the Great Western Railway at Green Lane Junction was made in 1847
