Gaerwen
(1849 - 1966)

Gaerwen Station was built by the Chester and Holyhead Railway and opened in January 1849

The main station which was provided with two platforms and the station building was located on the north side of the line, serving eastbound trains. There was a small shelter on the Holyhead bound platform

On December 16 1864, the Anglesey Central Railway made a connection to the main line just to the west of Gaerwen Station. They started to run goods services as far as Llangefni and introduced a passenger service on March 12 1865. By June 3 1867, they had extended their line to Almwch. This resulted in Gaerwen becoming an important junction station

The station served the local community for many years but by the second half of the 20th century, traffic had begun to decline. On December 7 1964 the station lost its services to and from Almwch and less than two years later on February 14 1966 the station closed to all passenger services

The buildings and platforms have been demolished but the Chester to Holyhead line still passes through the station site
