Cressington formerly Cressington & Grassendale
(1864 - 1972 - 1978 - )

The station, originally called Cressington & Grassendale, opened in 1864 as part of the Garston and Liverpool Railway between Brunswick and Garston Dock

It is sandwiched between Knowsley and Salisbury Roads with the Grade II listed station buildings on a lane linking the two roads. As part of the Merseyrail upgrade, the platforms were lengthened to accommodate 6-car trains. This proved problematic, as the station is situated between two bridges in a narrow cutting. Special dispensation was given by the Railway Inspectorate to build the platforms narrower than the 6-foot width which would normally be required

The station was closed in 1972 and it reopened in 1978 and is used by trains on the Merseyrail network between Southport and Hunts Cross
