Sankey for Penketh
(1874 - )


The station was opened in August 1874 and is the first station towards Warrington after the old Widnes loop line

In August 1939, eight loops to the north of the line were laid for the RAF maintenance unit at Burtonwood which also served as a large wartime base manned by the Americans. The loops were closed at the end of the war in 1945 but re-opened in 1976 to be closed again in 1993

It is currently operated by Northern Rail
