Irlam Soap Works Halt
(1873 - 1964)
When the Manchester Ship Canal was being built it rendered a section of the River Irwell redundant. A piece of land between the river and the Ship Canal was developed by the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) as their main soap works
The company supplied a shuttle service between its works and Irlam station to co-incide with the arrival of main line trains in the morning and the evening
CWS staff had to access the high-level station at Irlam by wooden stairs at the rear of the station. The Soap Works ceased to use its rail connection in the 1960s
